Zines, or fanzines, were a popular way of distributing information during the 1980s Grindcore scene. Zines allowed young people to create their own publication with little expense. For a young band, this removed the dependency upon music press and promotion agencies as they were able to write about their music and inform people of their releases and gigs.

Writing zines was also a way for bands to talk about their political beliefs and encouraged the integration of music and politics.
